BHP's copper division has achieved a milestone by surpassing iron ore earnings for the first time in the company's history. The division's underlying EBITDA rose to $18.2 billion from $12.3 billion a year earlier, representing 54% of total group EBITDA. This significant increase in copper revenue was driven by higher realised prices across copper, iron ore, and steelmaking coal. BHP's copper division was the biggest positive surprise in the company's FY2026 annual results, with a 30% jump in underlying attributable profit to $13.2 billion and a 27% rise in underlying EBITDA to $32.9 billion. The company's dividend payout ratio also exceeded analyst expectations, with a 66% payout ratio declared. These results have boosted BHP's stock, with the company being among the top boosts to the ASX 200 index, which added 0.2%.
