Grayscale Converts Zcash Trust to ETF
Grayscale has filed its fourth amendment to convert the Zcash Trust into an exchange-traded fund (ETF), subject to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) registration becoming effective. The conversion will list shares of the trust on NYSE Arca under the existing ZCSH ticker.
DCG Subsidiary Weighs $110M ZEC Investment
According to an Aug. 18 registration statement filed with the SEC, a Digital Currency Group subsidiary, DCG International Investments Ltd., is considering an investment representing about 200,000 ZEC, currently worth roughly $110 million. The potential investment could add a significant investor to the product.
Background on Zcash Vulnerability
The Zcash team deployed emergency network changes in June after a vulnerability in Orchard, Zcash's shielded transaction pool, was discovered. Although no evidence of exploitation was found, the privacy properties of Orchard made it difficult to prove that counterfeit ZEC had never been created. The issue led to a sharp market reaction and attention towards Ironwood, a network upgrade designed to contain the supply risk.
ETF Structure and Market Impact
Under the proposed ETF structure, authorized participants will be able to purchase and redeem shares in blocks of 10,000 shares, which Grayscale defines as baskets. The trust intends to issue shares continuously once the registration becomes effective and the NYSE Arca listing is completed. The possible DCG International Investments purchase could add a significant investor to the product, although Grayscale has not provided a timetable for the discussions or stated whether the subsidiary has committed capital to the transaction.
