Institutional Investors Boost Bitcoin ETF Holdings Amid Q2 Decline
Institutional investors have taken a contrarian approach to the recent decline in Bitcoin's value, increasing their holdings in US spot Bitcoin ETFs by 7.5% in Q2 2026.
According to an analysis of 13F filings, institutional investors now hold a record 44.2% of the total Bitcoin ETF holdings, with total holdings declining 6.6% over the quarter to 1,211,322 BTC.
The usual suspects, including Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan, led the charge, with both increasing their iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) holdings. Hedge funds also joined the party, with Millennium and Jane Street reportedly increasing their activity in Bitcoin ETF positions during the quarter.
The math is straightforward: while total ETF holdings dropped by 85,000 BTC, institutional holdings within those ETFs rose by 37,000 BTC. This means non-institutional holders, primarily retail investors and smaller advisors, shed well over 100,000 BTC from their ETF positions.
The record 44.2% institutional ownership figure creates a benchmark that future quarters will be measured against.
