Santos Enters Production Growth Phase
Santos Limited (ASX:STO) presented its first-half 2026 results on August 19, 2026, characterizing the period as a pivotal transition year as the Australian oil and gas producer shifts from major capital investment to production growth and cash generation. The company’s stock rose 3.02% to $8.355 following the presentation, trading near its 52-week high of $8.42, as investors responded positively to operational progress at two flagship projects and maintained dividend commitments.
Operational Progress and Production Volumes
The company safely commissioned the Barossa LNG project in Australia’s Northern Territory and achieved first oil at the Pikka development in Alaska, building long-term production and value for shareholders. Total production volumes of 45.6 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe) in the first half, representing a 3% increase compared to the prior half-year period. Santos projected that second-half 2026 production volumes would increase approximately 20-30% compared to the first half as both major projects ramp toward plateau rates.
Financial Highlights
Santos reported sales revenue of $2.6 billion and EBITDAX of $1.6 billion for the first half. Free cash flow from operations totaled $378 million, impacted by one-off commissioning costs at the new projects, cargo timing effects, and a PNG LNG underlift position. The company declared an interim dividend of 11.6 US cents per share, totaling $377 million, representing approximately 100% of free cash flow from operations and demonstrating commitment to shareholder returns.
Barossa and Pikka Projects
The Barossa LNG project progressed through commissioning to steady-state production, with seven cargoes loaded in the first half and 12 cargoes year-to-date by the presentation date. Each of the six wells confirmed capacity of 300 mmscf/d, and cargoes are now being shipped approximately every eight days. The Pikka project in Alaska represents a significant growth driver for Santos, with the company achieving first oil in May 2026 and lifting its first cargo of 450,000 barrels in August 2026.
Outlook and Liquidity
The company maintained strong liquidity of $3.8 billion through cash and undrawn committed facilities, with no debt maturities until September 2027. Santos presented a detailed view of its financial position, emphasizing strong liquidity and manageable debt maturities.
