A recent study by Betterment found that 52% of Gen Z investors have redirected funds from traditional investments to sports betting in the past year. This shift in behavior is driven by the influence of social media and artificial intelligence on their financial decisions.
The study, which surveyed 1,000 individual American investors, revealed that 60% of Gen Z investors use social media as their primary source of financial news, up from 45% two years ago. Additionally, nearly half of Gen Z investors reported that an algorithm had influenced a financial decision they would not have otherwise made.
Financial Habits
The lines between traditional financial investing and gambling are becoming increasingly blurred among younger investors. While only 4% of baby boomers redirected funds to sports betting, 26% of Gen Z investors consider sports betting a deliberate component of their overall financial strategy.
This trend coincides with the rapid legalization of sports betting in the US and a growing pessimism about the returns on traditional savings methods. As a result, the ability of financial sector players to offer educational tools will be crucial in determining the direction of individual savings.
