Constellation Energy CEO Joseph Dominguez has stressed that existing power plants are crucial for meeting the increasing electricity demands of data centers. During the company's Q2 2026 earnings call, Dominguez argued that the economy cannot afford to wait for new power plants to be built. Instead, he believes that the current grid has substantial untapped capacity that can be utilized to support data center operators.
Existing Capacity
Constellation controls approximately 55 GW of generation capacity, with about 22 GW coming from nuclear plants. The company is pursuing both grid-supplied and co-located power solutions for data center clients, and is also exploring peak power management through batteries and demand response solutions.
Texas Demand
The state of Texas is experiencing a significant surge in electricity demand, with its interconnection queue accumulating around 474 GW of large-load requests, mostly from data centers. This is roughly five times the peak electricity demand Texas has ever recorded. Despite the Batch Zero interconnection process being paused for an audit, Constellation expects no significant delay from the review.
Nuclear Uprates
The company has identified potential for approximately 1.1 GW of nuclear uprates across its facilities, which would allow reactors to produce more electricity without new construction. Additionally, Constellation is in the process of settling asset sale obligations tied to its acquisition of Calpine, including the recent sale of its 606 MW Brazos Valley gas plant for $860 million.
