China has launched its largest artificial intelligence industrial park in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia. The park's centerpiece, Envision Group's Galaxy Campus, became operational around August 6 and can house up to 1 million AI accelerators. The facility is powered by renewable energy, with a target compute capacity exceeding 1 million petaflops.
AI Industrial Park Details
The Galaxy Campus spans 120,000 square meters and aims to surpass 2 gigawatts of energy capacity, sourced primarily through integrated renewables. Ulanqab's average temperature of around 4°C (39°F) reduces cooling costs, while the region's abundant wind and solar resources support Envision's broader pitch.
National Strategy Alignment
This setup aligns with Beijing's 'East Data, West Computing' national strategy, which routes data-intensive workloads from expensive eastern cities to resource-rich western regions. Ulanqab has attracted 89 data center projects to date, combining for over 5 million contracted server racks. Major companies like Alibaba, Huawei, and Tencent already operate infrastructure in the region.
Expansion Plans
Envision Group plans to build 5 GW of green AI computing capacity in desert and arid regions globally by 2030, with the Ulanqab facility as its flagship. DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, is reportedly in discussions for approximately 1 GW of AI data center capacity in Ulanqab.
