What is Worldcoin (WLD)?

Worldcoin is an iris-biometric cryptocurrency project initiated in 2019 by Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), Max Novendstern, and Alex Blania. Developed by “Tools for Humanity,” the project aims to solve the problem of digital identity by verifying “personhood” in an age dominated by AI and automation.

How does it work?

The ecosystem revolves around three primary components:

  • The Orb: A physical device that captures iris scans to generate a unique digital identifier, ensuring users are real humans and not bots.
  • World ID: A privacy-preserving digital identity built on the blockchain. It serves as a “digital passport” for the internet.
  • World App: A wallet application that enables users to manage their World ID and store their WLD tokens.

What makes it unique?

Worldcoin differentiates itself through its Proof-of-Personhood model. Unlike typical cryptocurrencies that rely on financial or computational capital, Worldcoin relies on biological uniqueness.

Technically, WLD operates on the Ethereum Mainnet while utilizing the Optimism Layer 2 network. This structure allows the project to inherit the high-level security of Ethereum while benefiting from the lower transaction costs and faster speeds of a Layer 2 solution. Furthermore, its tokenomics are designed for mass distribution, with 75% of the 10 billion WLD supply allocated to the community to promote global inclusivity.

Future outlook

Launched as an ambitious project to bridge the gap between AI and human identity, Worldcoin remains a controversial yet high-profile venture. Since its inception, the project has attracted massive interest from top venture capital firms like Andreessen Horowitz. While critics voice concerns regarding data privacy and the collection of biometric information, proponents argue that World ID is a necessary infrastructure for a future where distinguishing between humans and AI agents will be increasingly difficult. As of 2026, the project continues to expand its global infrastructure, aiming to solidify its position as the standard for decentralized identity.
