What is Zora (ZORA)?

Zora is a decentralized protocol and platform designed for the creator economy. Originally established as an NFT marketplace, it has evolved into comprehensive infrastructure for publishing, sharing, and trading digital media directly onchain. Led by Jacob Horne and Dee Goens, Zora focuses on removing intermediaries, allowing creators to retain control over their distribution and audience interaction.

How does it work?

Zora leverages open-source smart contracts compatible with the Ethereum ecosystem. The project operates via two primary technological layers:

  • Zora Network: A Layer 2 scaling solution built on the OP Stack, enabling high-speed and low-cost onchain publishing.
  • Base Integration: The ZORA token operates on Base, supporting ecosystem utility and community engagement.

The platform allows users to mint NFTs, discover creative projects, and participate in drops. Because the underlying technology is open-source, developers can build custom interfaces and creative applications on top of the Zora stack.

What makes it unique?

Zora distinguishes itself by prioritizing “onchain-first” media. Unlike traditional NFT platforms that may rely on centralized servers for metadata, Zora focuses on recording creative projects directly onto the blockchain. By providing the tools for decentralized publication, it enables a transparent environment where creators and collectors interact without the constraints of a traditional corporate gatekeeper.

Future outlook (2025 and beyond)

Launched in April 2025, the ZORA token serves as a utility tool within the ecosystem, incentivizing creator activity and community participation. With a maximum supply of 10 billion, the token was distributed to early adopters and creators via community airdrops.

As of mid-2026, Zora continues to position itself as a foundational pillar for Web3 creativity. While Zora Labs oversees development, the platform’s focus remains on fostering an open creative hub. Investors should note that ZORA is not a governance token and does not grant ownership in Zora Labs; it functions primarily as a mechanism to facilitate engagement and reward participation within the Zora network.
