OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its chatbot designed for users aged 13 to 17. The new version includes enhanced parental controls, quiet hours, break reminders, and a guided Study Mode. By default, users who register their birthdays will be assigned the teen model, and OpenAI's systems will automatically switch users to the teen model if they fall within the age range.
The teen model is designed to reduce exposure to mature content, including violence, self-harm, eating disorders, and dangerous activities. It will also be less likely to imply personal feelings, consciousness, or emotions. Additionally, the model will provide more frequent break reminders and allow users to set quiet hours when the chatbot cannot be used.
A Study Mode, developed in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and education specialists, will guide users through academic material using guiding questions and homework reminders. The Study Hours feature will schedule Study Mode by default, with controls available to users and their parents.
OpenAI has partnered with education nonprofit Code AI to provide resources about how the technology works and how to use it constructively. This move aims to promote safe usage and learning among teenagers.
Enhanced Safety Features
The teen model includes several safety features, including:
- Parental controls to limit exposure to mature content
- Quiet hours to reduce distractions
- Break reminders to promote productivity and focus
- A Study Mode to guide users through academic material
Partnerships and Resources
OpenAI has partnered with Code AI to provide resources and support for users and educators. This partnership aims to promote safe and effective use of the chatbot in educational settings.
