What is Bio Protocol?

Bio Protocol (BIO) acts as the foundational financial layer for the Decentralized Science (DeSci) movement. By leveraging blockchain technology, the platform accelerates the discovery of new medicines and therapies. It operates by empowering communities to form Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (BioDAOs), which focus on specific scientific fields to fund, manage, and scale research projects.

How does it work?

Bio Protocol functions through the tokenization of scientific intellectual property. Key mechanisms include:

  • BioDAOs: Specialized groups pool capital to fund specific research niches, such as life-extension (VitaDAO) or women’s health (AthenaDAO).
  • IP-NFTs and IPTs: Scientific research is tokenized into Intellectual Property Non-Fungible Tokens (IP-NFTs) and Intellectual Property Tokens (IPTs), allowing participants to gain co-ownership and direct stake in research outcomes.
  • BIO Token Utility: The native BIO token grants holders governance rights to vote on supported BioDAOs, priority access to early-stage funding rounds, and influence over the broader ecosystem’s growth.

What makes it unique?

Bio Protocol distinguishes itself by bridging the gap between high-level biotechnological research and retail finance. Its dual-chain architecture—utilizing both Ethereum and Solana—provides the scalability and flexibility required for complex scientific transactions. Furthermore, by formalizing intellectual property on-chain, it creates a transparent, liquid market for assets that were previously locked within academic and corporate silos.

Founded by Paul Kohlhaas, who also co-founded Molecule and VitaDAO, the project benefits from deep integration with established figures in both the blockchain and biotech sectors.

Future Outlook

As the DeSci movement gains traction, Bio Protocol is positioned to become a critical infrastructure provider for scientists seeking funding outside traditional, often slow, institutional channels. While crypto markets remain inherently volatile, market projections suggest a long-term growth trajectory. Analysts forecast minimum price thresholds reaching €0.0368 by 2028 and €0.0769 by 2033, reflecting optimistic sentiment regarding the utility of decentralized science.

Investors interested in BIO should perform thorough due diligence, as the asset, like all cryptocurrencies, carries significant risks.
