What is Ether.fi?

Ether.fi is a decentralized, non-custodial liquid restaking protocol built on Ethereum. It allows users to stake ETH while retaining full control over their assets and private keys. Unlike traditional centralized staking services, Ether.fi eliminates the need for users to relinquish asset custody, utilizing smart contracts to manage staking operations securely on-chain.

How does it work?

The protocol functions by locking user ETH into smart contracts. In return, participants receive liquid staking tokens (LSTs) such as eETH and weETH, which maintain the value of the staked position while allowing the underlying assets to accrue rewards.

Key mechanics include:

  • Restaking Integration: Ether.fi integrates with EigenLayer, enabling staked ETH to contribute to the security of multiple networks and services simultaneously.
  • Liquid Tokens:
    • eETH: A rebasing token that reflects rewards through an increasing balance in the user’s wallet.
    • weETH: A non-rebasing variant where the token value increases, making it ideal for integration into DeFi lending, borrowing, and collateral protocols.

What makes it unique?

The primary differentiator for Ether.fi is its commitment to non-custodial infrastructure. By ensuring that the protocol itself does not manage user funds directly, it minimizes counterparty risk. Furthermore, the combination of liquid staking and restaking provides users with high capital efficiency, enabling them to earn rewards from the Ethereum network and additional ecosystems without locking their liquidity away.

Governance and Future Outlook

ETHFI serves as the native governance token for the ecosystem. Holders exercise voting rights on protocol parameters, fee structures, and future developments. Founded by Mike Silagadze and a team of Ethereum developers, Ether.fi seeks to further the decentralization of the Ethereum staking landscape. As the protocol matures, the focus remains on enhancing the restaking ecosystem and expanding the utility of its liquid tokens across the broader DeFi sector.
