What is Bancor (BNT)?

Bancor (BNT) is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol and liquidity network built on the Ethereum blockchain. Launched in 2017 by Eyal Herzog, Guy Benartzi, and Galia Benartzi, it pioneered the concept of the Automated Market Maker (AMM). Unlike traditional centralized exchanges that rely on order books, Bancor enables trustless token trading directly through smart contracts.

How does it work?

The platform utilizes a unique mathematical protocol known as the “Bancor Formula.” This algorithm automatically sets token prices based on the ratio of tokens within a liquidity pool, ensuring that assets can be traded even without a specific counterparty.

Key operational components include:

  • Liquidity Pools: Users stake tokens into smart contracts to provide liquidity, earning fees in return.
  • BNT as an Intermediary: The Bancor Network Token (BNT) serves as the “hub” asset, linking various tokens within the ecosystem to maintain price discovery and liquidity.
  • Governance: BNT holders can participate in the platform’s decision-making processes.

What makes it unique?

Bancor’s primary innovation is the elimination of the middleman. By automating the market-making process, it creates a democratic and highly accessible environment for trading ERC-20 tokens. Its focus on constant liquidity ensures that traders do not have to wait for an order to be matched, effectively solving the “thin order book” problem common in smaller tokens. Furthermore, the protocol incorporates buyback-and-burn mechanisms designed to manage supply and potentially enhance token value.

Future outlook and origins

Launched in 2017 during the height of the initial coin offering boom, Bancor was one of the first major projects to conceptualize decentralized liquidity. While the DeFi landscape has grown significantly since, Bancor’s foundational role in pioneering AMMs cements its place as a cornerstone of the ecosystem. As the protocol continues to evolve, it remains focused on enhancing capital efficiency and providing secure, decentralized exchange services for the global crypto community.
