Asia FX Rises as US Treasury Yields Ease
The US dollar hovered near its lowest level since early June, providing some breathing room for Asian currencies. The US Dollar Index was last down 0.1% at 99.57, while the 10-year Treasury yield eased to 4.702%.
S. Korean Won Hits 1-Year High
The South Korean won was the top gainer on Wednesday, with the USD/KRW pair dropping nearly 1% to its lowest since September 2025. The currency's strength was driven by the recent easing of US Treasury yields and expectations of a softer US rates environment.
Asian Currencies Rise
Asian currencies, including the Japanese yen and Singapore dollar, also rose on Wednesday. However, gains were restrained by elevated oil prices and lingering geopolitical risks.
Market Reaction
Markets have been focused on whether the July Fed meeting minutes will reinforce expectations that the central bank could keep rates higher for longer or deliver a hike this year. The Fed kept its benchmark rate in a 3.50%-3.75% range at its July 29 meeting.
Analysts' Views
MUFG analysts noted that the strongest gains were concentrated in KRW and TWD, pointing to investor preference for currencies leveraged to a softer US rates environment and a resilient global technology cycle.
