What is The Graph?

The Graph is an open-source, decentralized indexing protocol designed to organize and provide efficient access to blockchain data. Often referred to as the “Google of Web3,” it enables developers to query data from blockchains—like Ethereum—that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to access directly. By utilizing The Graph, dApp developers can build more responsive and powerful decentralized applications.

How Does It Work?

The Graph utilizes “subgraphs,” which are open APIs that organize data into a searchable format. The network functions through a specialized ecosystem of participants:

  • Indexers: Node operators who stake GRT to index data and serve queries.
  • Curators: Participants who analyze and signal which subgraphs are valuable, ensuring high-quality data.
  • Delegators: Users who delegate their GRT to Indexers to secure the network and earn a portion of rewards.

The network is powered by the GRT token, which aligns the incentives of all participants, ensuring the integrity and decentralization of the indexing service.

What Makes It Unique?

Unlike centralized data providers, The Graph is trustless. It removes the reliance on private servers to host blockchain data, shifting this responsibility to a decentralized network of nodes. This architecture ensures that data remains verifiable and censorship-resistant. Because it operates on a global scale, it reduces the technical overhead for developers, allowing them to focus on product building rather than infrastructure maintenance.

Future Outlook and History

Launched in 2020 by founders Yaniv Tal, Jannis Pohlmann, and Brandon Ramirez, The Graph quickly became a foundational pillar of the DeFi and Web3 ecosystem. The 2020 launch marked a shift toward a more robust decentralized infrastructure. Today, as the demand for complex decentralized applications grows, The Graph continues to scale, providing the necessary indexing layer to support the next generation of blockchain-based internet.
