What is Ethereum Name Service (ENS)?

Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a decentralized domain name system built on the Ethereum blockchain. Launched in 2017, it replaces long, complex hexadecimal wallet addresses with human-readable, recognizable names ending in .eth. By bridging the gap between machine-readable data and human-friendly naming, ENS enhances the usability of Web3 applications.

How does it work?

ENS utilizes a series of Ethereum smart contracts to manage the registration and resolution of domain names. When a user registers a domain, the contract maps that name to their specific Ethereum address or other identification data. This system acts as a decentralized phonebook for the blockchain.

The ENS ecosystem is powered by the native ENS governance token. Holders of this token participate in the project’s Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO), voting on key protocol changes, treasury management, and future upgrades.
