What is API3?

API3 is a decentralized blockchain project designed to bridge the gap between traditional Web2 APIs and decentralized applications (dApps). Launched to solve the “oracle problem,” API3 enables smart contracts to access real-world data—such as financial market feeds or weather updates—directly from providers without relying on third-party middlemen.

How does it work?

The core innovation of API3 is the Airnode. Unlike traditional oracle solutions that utilize third-party nodes to aggregate data, Airnode is a lightweight, serverless node that API providers can operate themselves.

By running their own Airnodes, data providers deliver information directly to the blockchain. This architecture creates a more efficient, cost-effective, and secure data stream by removing intermediaries, thereby reducing potential attack vectors and points of failure.

What makes it unique?

  • First-Party Oracles: API3 emphasizes a “first-party” approach. Data providers maintain full control over the data they supply to smart contracts.
  • Decentralized Governance: The API3 token acts as a governance tool, allowing stakeholders to vote on network upgrades and financial decisions.
  • Staking Mechanism: Users can stake API3 tokens to help secure the network, receiving rewards in return for their contribution to the ecosystem’s integrity.

Founders and Context

API3 was established by a trio of experts in software development and blockchain infrastructure: Heikki Vänttinen, Burak Benligiray, and Sasa Milic.

Emerging in 2020, the project addressed a critical bottleneck in the growth of DeFi: the lack of reliable, native connectivity between legacy data systems and decentralized ledgers. Since its inception, API3 has focused on creating a scalable oracle layer that aligns with the decentralized ethos of the broader Web3 movement.
