What is Avantis?

Avantis is a decentralized exchange (DEX) engineered to bridge the gap between traditional financial markets and decentralized finance (DeFi). Operating on the Base blockchain, it enables users to trade a diverse range of assets—including cryptocurrencies, currencies (FX), commodities, and stock indices—in a permissionless environment. Founded by Harsehaj Singh and Raymond Dong, the protocol aims to bring institutional-grade trading products to the blockchain while maintaining the efficiency of DeFi.

How does it work?

Avantis utilizes perpetual contracts, allowing traders to speculate on asset price movements without requiring direct ownership of the underlying asset. The platform’s core mechanism relies on on-chain price feeds and smart contracts to ensure reliable tracking of real-world assets (RWAs).

A standout feature is the “Zero-Fee” perpetual model. In many trading scenarios, users only incur trading fees when positions are profitable, a unique structure designed to reduce the barrier to entry for frequent traders compared to standard DeFi protocols.

What makes it unique?

  1. RWA Integration: By bringing commodities and indices on-chain, Avantis expands DeFi utility beyond native crypto tokens.
  2. Base Infrastructure: Built on the Base Layer-2, the platform benefits from high throughput and minimal transaction costs, ensuring a seamless user experience.
  3. Profit-Based Fee Model: By aligning costs with trading success, Avantis offers a competitive edge for active participants looking to minimize overhead.
  4. Non-Custodial: Trading occurs directly through the protocol without intermediaries, giving users full control over their funds.

Future outlook (2024 Context)

As of 2024, Avantis continues to position itself as a key player in the RWA narrative within the crypto ecosystem. By leveraging the speed of the Base chain and expanding the variety of tradeable assets, the protocol addresses the growing demand for hybrid financial products. With a capped supply of 1 billion AVNT tokens, the project focuses on scaling its infrastructure and deepening its liquidity pools to support a broader range of financial instruments for both retail and professional traders.
