What is THORChain?

THORChain is a decentralized liquidity protocol that facilitates the exchange of native assets across disparate blockchain networks. Unlike traditional centralized exchanges (CEXs) that act as intermediaries, THORChain operates without custodians, allowing users to swap assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum directly in a trustless, non-custodial environment.

How does it work?

The protocol utilizes a system of continuous liquidity pools. Users contribute assets to these pools to provide the necessary liquidity for trades. In return, contributors earn yield generated from swap fees. The system uses deterministic pricing—specifically “continuous liquidity pools”—to manage slippage and maintain stable price discovery even during periods of high volatility.

The Role of RUNE

The native RUNE token is the backbone of the THORChain ecosystem. It serves four primary functions:

  • Liquidity: RUNE is paired with external assets in liquidity pools.
  • Security: Network nodes must bond RUNE to secure the network and validate transactions.
  • Governance: RUNE holders influence the protocol’s development and parameters.
  • Incentives: The token is used to reward liquidity providers for their contributions.

Unique Technology: Cross-Chain Swaps

THORChain enables native asset swaps rather than using “wrapped” versions of tokens (like WBTC). By leveraging an architecture that allows blockchains to communicate, the network permits users to send one asset (e.g., BTC) to a vault and receive another (e.g., ETH) on the target chain. This removes the “bridge risk” often associated with token wrapping.

Ecosystem and History

Founded by an anonymous team to ensure total decentralization, the project emerged around 2019. The ecosystem functions through three main participants:

  1. Traders: Perform cross-chain swaps.
  2. Liquidity Providers: Supply capital to pools for yield.
  3. Nodes: Maintain the infrastructure and provide security through bond requirements.

The project maintains a commitment to censorship resistance, operating as a permissionless, global network for decentralized finance (DeFi).
