Sei has begun rolling out its Eidos storage upgrade, a key component of its Giga roadmap that targets throughput of 200,000 transactions per second. The upgrade is designed to remove storage constraints that could prevent the network's execution layer from operating at the planned speeds. Eidos is the storage component of a three-part architecture overhaul that also includes Autobahn for consensus and Ares for transaction execution.
Upgrade Details
The first Eidos components have already reached mainnet through Sei v6.6, with the full storage system being introduced in stages. The upgrade replaces traditional Merkle trees with FlatKV, a flat key-value storage system, and LtHash, a lattice hashing system that maintains a running fingerprint of the state. This change is expected to significantly improve the network's performance and scalability.
Performance Targets
The technical change is tied directly to the performance targets outlined for Giga, which include 200,000 transactions per second, 5 gigagas of throughput, and finality below 400 milliseconds. To achieve these targets, the network needs to be able to write hundreds of thousands of database entries every second, making the storage layer a critical component of the upgrade.
Node Operator Impact
The infrastructure work is being carried out without stopping the blockchain, with existing and replacement storage systems operating alongside one another while data moves in batches from block to block. The rollout is controlled through governance and has been designed with a rollback process if problems emerge.
