What is Ethereum PoW (ETHW)?

Ethereum PoW (ETHW) is a blockchain network that emerged as a community-driven fork of the original Ethereum mainnet. Launched in September 2022, ETHW maintains the legacy Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, contrasting with the mainnet Ethereum network’s shift to Proof of Stake (PoS). It serves as a refuge for miners who wished to continue securing an Ethereum-based chain through hardware-intensive mining.

How does it work?

ETHW functions through a decentralized network of nodes utilizing the Ethash mining algorithm. Miners compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles, validating transactions and securing the network. Successful miners receive block rewards denominated in ETHW tokens, alongside associated transaction fees. This model ensures immutability, as validated blocks are permanently recorded on the ledger.

What makes it unique?

The primary distinction of ETHW is its architectural preservation of the pre-Merge Ethereum environment. Unlike Ethereum, which moved to a energy-efficient stake-based system, ETHW prioritizes traditional mining infrastructure. It maintains compatibility with the Solidity programming language and the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing existing smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) to migrate or deploy on the chain with minimal friction.

Future outlook and context

Ethereum PoW was born from the 2022 “Merge,” an event that rendered GPU-based mining on the main Ethereum chain obsolete. By forking, the ETHW community aimed to ensure the continuity of mining revenue and ecosystem access for those unable or unwilling to switch to staking models. While the network continues to facilitate transactions and decentralized finance (DeFi) activity, it remains a niche alternative to the primary Ethereum ecosystem, heavily reliant on sustained miner participation and developer interest to maintain long-term relevance.
