What is Espresso (ESP)?

Espresso is a decentralized infrastructure network engineered to solve the “sequencer problem” within the Ethereum rollup ecosystem. While rollups significantly improve transaction speed and cost, they often rely on centralized sequencers to order transactions. Espresso replaces these single points of failure with a distributed network of validators, ensuring transaction ordering is transparent, censorship-resistant, and secure.

How does it work?

Espresso functions as a shared sequencing layer. Instead of one entity dictating transaction order, a decentralized validator set reaches consensus using HotShot, a high-performance Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism.

  1. Transaction Ordering: Rollups send transactions to the Espresso network.
  2. HotShot Consensus: Validators agree on the sequence of these transactions.
  3. Execution: The ordered transactions are sent back to the rollups for execution on their respective layers.

The ESP token powers this ecosystem. Validators stake ESP to secure the network and order transactions, earning rewards in return. The token also facilitates governance, allowing the community to vote on protocol upgrades and parameter adjustments.

What makes it unique?

Unlike Layer-1 blockchains that execute smart contracts, Espresso focuses exclusively on transaction sequencing and coordination. By acting as a shared infrastructure layer, it enables multiple rollups to leverage the same ordering service. This cross-rollup coordination reduces fragmentation, improves interoperability, and facilitates seamless asset transfers between disparate Layer-2 networks.

Future outlook and context

As the Ethereum ecosystem continues to scale via rollups, the need for decentralized sequencing has become critical. By moving away from centralized gatekeepers, Espresso addresses core concerns regarding rollup security and liveness. In 2024 and beyond, the project aims to integrate with major rollup solutions to become the industry standard for decentralized sequencing, significantly enhancing the efficiency and connectivity of the broader blockchain landscape.

The project is led by a veteran team including Ben Fisch, Jill Gunter, Charles Lu, and Benedikt Bünz, bringing deep expertise in cryptography and distributed systems to the forefront of Web3 infrastructure.
