What is Compound (COMP)?

Compound is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol built on the Ethereum blockchain. Founded in 2018 by Robert Leshner and Geoffrey Hayes, the project aims to replace traditional financial intermediaries with autonomous, transparent smart contracts. The COMP token serves as the governance asset, empowering users to propose and vote on protocol upgrades.

How does it work?

Compound functions as an algorithmic, autonomous interest rate protocol. Users act as either lenders or borrowers:

  • Lenders: Deposit supported cryptocurrencies into the protocol’s liquidity pools to earn interest.
  • Borrowers: Provide collateral to borrow assets from these pools.

Interest rates are determined dynamically by supply and demand via smart contracts. When supply is high, rates decrease to encourage borrowing; when supply is low, rates increase to incentivize liquidity providers.

What makes it unique?

Unlike centralized financial services, Compound operates without a central authority. It utilizes:

  1. Smart Contracts: Automated code executes all transactions, ensuring transparency and neutrality.
  2. Incentivization: The COMP token rewards active participants, including lenders and borrowers, for contributing to the ecosystem’s liquidity.
  3. Governance: Token holders control the direction of the protocol, allowing the community to vote on risk parameters, new asset additions, and protocol governance.

Future Outlook and Origins

Launched during the early evolution of the DeFi sector, Compound became a cornerstone of the Ethereum ecosystem. By 2020, the project shifted toward community governance via the distribution of COMP, signaling a move toward true decentralization. Today, it remains a foundational layer for yield-seeking investors and developers building sophisticated decentralized applications. As the DeFi landscape matures, Compound continues to adapt its protocols to provide efficient, permissionless financial services globally.
